Team Sinsinawa Steppers
Well, Year 5 certainly looks different! We will socially distance and be safe while we support the many affected by this disease.
We are walking here at the Mound to raise awareness, to de-stigmatize, to encourage and receive encouragement in the journey with Alzheimer's and other dementias. We walk this year to honor, especially, the memory of Mary Ann Heyd, OP, inspiration for courageously and lovingly walking the walk.
Although Alzheimer's disease is not a normal part of aging, the risk of developing the illness rises with age. Current research from the National Institute on Aging indicates that the prevalence of Alzheimer's disease doubles every five years beyond age 65, with one in two people over 85 affected.
The Alzheimer’s & Dementia Alliance of Wisconsin helps people in south central and western Wisconsin as they face every stage of this disease, a commitment they have maintained for more than 30 years. They have helped us launch the Mound Memory Cafe, trained us in Dementia Friendly Community, connected us with dementia specialists to answer our many questions, offered Family Caregiver Education and Crossing Bridges, support we would not want to be without.
