The Harrington Family of Mineral Point will serve as the Family Chairs for this year’s Iowa County Alzheimer’s Walk. Alvernon
"Verne" Harrington was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2015.
Verne has always had a passion for adventure, exploring and education; never
saying no to an opportunity or challenge. Now she's struggling with the biggest
challenge of her life. But she's not alone. The family has rallied around her and considers it a
blessing to still have Verne with them.
“Every day we learn to love the person
she is and not mourn the person she was," the family shared on their walk fundraising page. "We continue to educate ourselves about
the disease as promising findings are being released after each Alzheimer's
conference, but it's not enough. And so we walk."
Medical Chair Elizabeth Green, PharmD, walks in memory of
her Granny who lost her battle with Alzheimer’s almost 3 years ago. The family
struggled with emotions and was uncertain how to react in a relationship that
was no longer familiar, when they first learned of the diagnosis.
Knowing that anger gets you nowhere, they became patient,
educated, and proactive. “We did everything we could to make the rest of her
time with us matter," stated Elizabeth.
Elizabeth is walking to bring a voice to this disease an in
the hope that someday no one else will have to.
Sue White, president and owner of Sienna Crest Assisted
Living, is Honorary Chair. Sienna Crest has been a supporter of ADAW and has
been actively involved in the annual Alzheimer’s Walk for many years. Sienna Crest shares our mission to support and educate families during the dementia journey.
Step forward and give hope to individuals and families
touched by dementia by joining the Harrington Family, Elizabeth Green, and Sue
White on Saturday, October 1 at the Grace Lutheran Church in Dodgeville.
