Walk Highlight

Dr. RichardsonThe Medical Chair for this year's walk is Palliative Medicine & Hospice Medical Director Gaines E. Richardson, MD. He has been with Monroe Clinic for 19 years, the first ten as a Family Physician.

ADAW has long partnership history with the Monroe Clinic including the annual Understanding and coping with the challenges of Alzheimer's disease and dementia workshop held each November and most recently, our early-stage program, Crossing Bridges

As a physician, Dr. Richardson is a proponent of staying socially active through early-stage programs like our Memory Cafes or Crossing Bridges.

"The Research shows that people who are regularly engaged in social interaction maintain their brain vitality better than those who are not. In the study of 800 men and women aged 75 and older, those who were more physically active, more mentally active or more socially engaged had a lower risk for developing dementia. The ones who combined these activities did even better. People in different phases of Alzheimer's will have different abilities, so what that social engagement looks like will be different, but may include travel, joining groups to play cards or dance and being involved in community activities or causes." stated Dr. Richardson.

James Wilson Monroe ManorThe Monroe Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Administrator James Wilson joins us as Corporate Chair. Monroe Manor helps both short-term and long-term residents with dementia. James is pleased to be this year's chair and values working with ADAW because all dollars raised stay local to serve people in need. He has been walking to raise awareness for the past four years and each year strives to have Monroe Manor be the largest team.

Step forward and give hope to individuals and families touched by dementia by joining Dr. Richardson and James Wilson on Saturday, September 10 at Behring Senior Center in Monroe
